Papendrecht
The name Papendrecht relates to the use in earlier times by Roman Catholic priests (papists) of the “drecht”, the local river crossing. Papendrecht is originally a free domain. The owners include the renowned family of Van Brederode. Meanwhile this old dike village has grown into a dynamic municipality with modern housing, many amenities, green and business parks.
The Stichting Dorpsbehoud Papendrecht [Foundation for the preservation of the Village Papendrecht] keeps the history of the Alblasserwaard dike village alive in its museum. Papendrecht is located opposite Dordrecht and has a frequent connection over water (the Waterbus) with this historic city.
