Zwijndrecht
The name Zwijndrecht is an amalgamation of the words ‘zwin’ (tidal channel) and ‘drecht’ (crossing place). So it means a place on a tidal channel where you can cross over. This explanation makes it likely that Zwijndrecht was connected to Dordrecht and was only separated at high tide. Zwijndrecht was originally a market garden village, situated between Dordrecht and Rotterdam.
To relax, there are ample opportunities in and around Zwijndrecht. For example, the extensive river lowlands of the Oude Maas provide very good opportunities for cyclists and walkers. Zwijndrecht has a frequent connection with Dordrecht by water (Waterbus). In the Noordpark and along the banks of the Oude Maas the modern statues from the Beeldenpark Drechtoevers are exhibited.
