National Park De Biesbosch
The edges of the island of Dordrecht are a part of the National Park De Biesbosch, a unique freshwater tidal area on the border of the provinces Zuid-Holland and Brabant. These exceptional wetlands came into being after the Saint Elisabethsflood of 1421, a storm tide disaster which had enormous consequences. The course of the large rivers changed and existing polders, villages and fields disappeared under the water. Over the centuries pieces of land were uncovered, the people created new
polders and the Hoeksche Waard and the island of Dordrecht came into being. But large wetland area remained where the tides, wind and water had full freedom. In the course of a few centuries, the Biesbosch as we now know it originated. You can still sail through narrow creeks, walk through rough willow beds, watch the overwintering birds, play golf, be deliciously lazy and have a picnic.
'Whisper Boat' tours
Excursions can be made throughout the year by solar-powered whisper boat. Some of these tours are combined with walking excursions. Shorter tours of Hollandse Biesbosch, or longer tours through the heart of the National Park are also available. Biesboschcentrum also hires out canoes, rowing boats and whisper boats to visitors wishing to explore the narrow creeks. This is the best way to explore the Hollands jungle!
Beavers
The Beverbos, adjacent to Biesboschcentrum, is home to a family of beavers. From the walkers' path, visitors can observe beavers in and around their artificial burrow. The best time to see the beavers in their natural habitat is in the early morning and at dusk . Friday evening boat tours are held every July and August, where observant visitors may catch a glimpse of the beaver family.
The Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht [Visitors' centre] in Dordrecht not only gives information about history, nature and recreation in the Biesbosch, but is also the starting point for sailing excursions and walks. Canoes and rowing boats can be hired too. Would you like to stay longer in the Biesbosch? Then book
